File Investigator v1.50 Copyright (C) 1999 by RobWare Copyright (C) 1999 by Robert C. Zirnstein Jr. All Rights Reserved File Investigator identifies over 330 types of files by content rather than filename extension. It extracts information out of many file types: image resolutions, sampling rates, document titles, etc.. Background information on each file type is provided. With this utility, you can identify files that Windows doesn't recognize, correct a wrong file extension, and find files faster. The FIPROP.EXE program returns an error level identifying a file, for BBS file screening. Ex: FI150SW.ZIP INSTALLATION From a floppy disk: Follow the installation instructions provided on the floppy disk label. From a downloaded archive: If you downloaded a .ZIP file, then you will need to use PKUnzip (or other Zip utility) on the file. Steps: 1. Copy the archive file to a temporary directory. 2. Run PKUNZIP.EXE on the archive. Ex: >PKUNZIP FI150SW.ZIP 3. Run FI150SW.EXE 4. Answer each of the installation prompts. 5. If prompted for a password, then type it in lower case letters. 6. If prompted for a password, then type it in lower case letters. Windows Start example: 1. Click the 'Start' button on the Windows Task Bar. 2. Click the 'Run...' menu option. 3. Type '\FI150SW.EXE'. 4. Click the 'OK' button. 5. Answer each of the installation prompts. 6. If prompted for a password, then type it in lower case letters. DOS Prompt example: C:\\FI150SW.EXE Notes: You can rename the .EXE archive file to .ZIP and use any UnZip utility on it. Keep your password in a safe place. You will need it when you download updates from the RobWare web site. REQUIREMENTS File Investigator requires MS Windows 95/98 or MS Windows NT 4.0. While it may work with MS Windows NT 3.x or MS Windows 3.x + Win32s, they have not been tested and are not guaranteed to work. File Investigator Properties fits on a 640x480 screen, but File Investigator File Find requires a 800x600 (small font) or larger screen resolution in order to be fully visible. File Investigator Directoryfor Windows requires Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (Win95b), or a later version of Windows, to run, because older OS versions do not support the GetDiskFreeSpaceEx() function. This function is required to correctly handle hard drives greater than 2 GigaBytes in size. DOCUMENTATION For full documentation, select Help from the application or select the 'File Investigate Manual' icon in the RobWare program group. TROUBLE SHOOTING All Versions: Q: When I paid for File Investigator over the Internet, I never received my password. A: The password is included in the email that is sent to you, from DigiBuy, as confirmation of your purchase. Make sure that you keep that password to unlock future updates to the software. Q: The password that I recieved after purchasing File Investigator does not work. A: You may have either downloaded the wrong archive file, or misunderstood the password. There are three different versions of File Investigator: Properties, File Find Upgrade (from Properties version), and File Find (non-upgrade). Each of these archives have different passwords. Double check that you downloaded the one that you paid for. The passwords are all four letters long and must be typed in all lower case letters. Q: I have some files that File Investigator either does not recognize or identifies as the wrong type of file. A: It is very difficult to identify many types of files, because they either have no recognizable file header or the RobWare engineers have not had the opportunity to analyze them yet. Some text files contain the same words/keys as other file formats. This often makes it impossible to discern them from the file format that they emulate. We at RobWare are eager to improve the File Investigator Engine to minimize these problems. If you would like us to improve or add a file format/type please follow these directions: 1. Send three or more example files to Support@RobWare.com. 2. Include any information that you have on the file type. 3. For each file sent, describe the differences between each one. Ex: File 1 is a 300 x 600 picture file, File 2 is a 100 x 200 fax image, etc. 4. Include the name(s) of the product(s) that created the file(s), what company makes/sells that product(s), how a RobWare engineer can get a copy of the product to create more test files. We understand that you may not be able to provide all of this information, but what ever you can provide will be much appreciated. There are more detailed instructions provided in the Adding/Improving File Types section of the File Investigator Help file. Q: When I run File Investigator, it is larger than my screen. A: You are probably using File Investigator File Find with a 640x480 screen resolution or 800x600 with a large screen font. The solution is to change to a small screen font or increase your screen resolution. Click on the 'Start' button in the Task Bar. Click on the 'Settings/Control Panel' menu option. Double click on the 'Display' icon. Select the 'Settings' tab. Change the 'Font size' to 'Small Fonts' or move the 'Desktop Area' slider closer to 'More'. Q: I tried to uninstall File Investigator by deleting all of its files, but the Registry entries and the 'Investigate' option are still there. A: You need to reinstall File Investigator, then use the uninstall option. The uninstall option in located on the 'Start' menu at Start/Programs/RobWare/Uninstall File Investigator. If you have trouble finding or using that option, then you can uninstall manually by running 'FISETUP.EXE /U' from a DOS Prompt, while in the directory that the files were installed to.
